I have owned an Arri Amira since it was released in 2014

and am still thrilled by the advantages this camera offers for documentary style shooting. In a world of modular camera systems it remains the first and best camera to offer the ergonomic advantages of traditional ENG cameras combined with the superior aesthetic of single S-35 sensors. The Arri brand not only stands for the widest dynamic range and best colour reproduction of any digital camera system, it is also renowned for robustness and dependability. Out of the box, the Amira balances perfectly on the shoulder without any additional attachments and thus enables smooth handheld operating and short set-up times.

I prefer to use my Fujnon Cabrio Zoom 19-90mm/2.8 or DZO Vespid primes, but of course the entire range of spherical PL-mount lenses are compatible with this camera, as well as 1.3 squeeze factor anamorphics. I can also provide as EF mount, which opens up the world of Canon phot lenses for budget-conscious projects.

Vertigo Turret

I recently acquired this fascinating bit of kit from inventor Ian Kerr csc. I pop it on my FX9 (yes , I also own one of those, sadly not all jobs are the right fit for an Amira) and can swing between three different prime lenses instantaneously. For documentary shooting it offers up a whole new world of possibilities, allowing me to shoot with primes with out the fear (Ian calls it “lensanxiety”) of not having the right focal length on or the time to swap to a different lens.

Drone

Small and compact UAEs have revolutionised filmmaking. I embraced this new tool early on and have logged many hours in the air. I am a qualified EASA A1/A3 & A2 pilot and currently use DJI Mavic 3 and DJI Mini 3 Pro.

DIY gear

Following on the tradition of pioneer DPs such as Guido Seeber, who were each known for their individual “box of tricks”, I have created some self-made equipment which can be very useful in the appropriate situation, such as a battery powered LED-China Ball, or a lightweight dolly.

Timelapse

In addition to a Sony A7S3 kit with GM lenses I also own a motorised Kessler Slider. I process the RAW photos with LR Timelapse, Lightroom and Final Cut Pro X and deliver finished 4K ProRes Clips.
